Community water systems are required to implement source water protection plans

Pennsylvania’s Source Water Assessment and Protection Program is voluntary.

Community water systems are encouraged to implement source water protection plans

The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection offers a variety of support for municipalities, water suppliers and the public to develop these local source water protection programs.

Funding is available to implement plans

The Source Water Protection Grant Program provides funding for wellhead or watershed protection projects. 

Periodic updates to plans are required

Source Water Protection Plans are required to be updated annually in Pennsylvania.

For FY 2022, the State Revolving Fund program utilized set-aside funding for source water protection programs

Set-aside funds will be used to enhance ongoing program efforts relative to source water assessment and protection, capability enhancement, and operator training and certification.”

Monitoring sources of drinking water accessed through private wells is required

The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection does not regulate private wells.

Funding is available to mitigate compromised sources of drinking water accessed through private wells

The state of Pennsylvania does not provide funding to mitigate issues with private wells.
