Dedicated/pathway-specific funding

MI EGLE and DNR use limited agency funding for things like boater registration inserts with Michigan-specific AIS laws and recommendations. However, the Michigan DNR Law Enforcement Division (LED) funding is currently solely supported by GLRI grant funding.

Pathway-specific dedicated time for program staff

Multiple staff spend time on AIS outreach to boaters primarily through messaging that teaches and encourages decontamination and compliance with AIS regulations for boaters, including LED officers

Pathway-specific dedicated time for outreach staff

Multiple staff spend time on AIS outreach to boaters primarily through messaging that teaches and encourages decontamination and compliance with AIS regulations for boaters.

Pathway-specific dedicated time for law enforcement officers

LED officers conduct dedicated patrols to ensure boater compliance to the states new AIS boating laws pertaining to clean, drain, dry

Officers are trained at a district level, by the Great Lake Enforcement Unit, on how to implement these laws

FUNDING A dedicated fund to support implementation and/or maintenance of a watercraft inspection/decontamination program is established through legal provisions

There is no dedicated fund for inspections and decontamination. Most of the outreach and decon work in MI implemented by agencies is done via grant funding

CLOSURE OF WATERS State-/province-managed boating access points can be closed and boating activities restricted if necessary to respond to an aquatic invasive species threat in that body of water

Depending on the severity of the situation, steps could be taken to request a closure

PENALTIES Penalties for violations of all relevant AIS prevention regulations are established
